Earth Stories are dreams, visions, memories often from childhood, messages from trees or rocks or Mouse. They are our personal mythology and reveal and shape how we experience and relate to nature and to each other. They ground us in the soil of the Earth, the flight of the birds, the fire of creation. Our Earth Stories help us get it. When we share our stories, they become more alive. More real. Were reminded of who we are, why were here. This was one of the powers of Oral Tradition, when stories were told generation after generation and were not written down. For many years people like Thomas Berry, Brian Swimme, Joanna Macy, and John Seed have talked about the need for a New Story, one that, as Thomas Berry puts it, provides in our times what mythic stories of the universe provided for tribal peoples and for the earlier classical civilizations in their times; a story that enables the human community to become present to the larger Earth community in a mutually enhancing manner. The new story is one of cosmic proportions and at the same time it is as near and intimate as the soil under our feet and the blood pulsing through our veins. Our personal Earth Stories help us know our place in the whole and provide an experience of the magic and enchantment that makes life worth living. | ||||||||
